Dog Backpacks

Backpacks are a fun way to assign a job (purpose) for over stimulated and high energy dogs.

A backpack can also be used to build confidence in anxious dogs, and when weighted, can help soothe anxiety.

Adding weight can help feed the need for "a job" in Working Breeds (Resistance Training) No matter the age or the fitness level of your dog, you want to limit how much weight you add to a backpack.

1. When first introducing your pooch to the backpack, equip yourself with their favorite snacks in a Treat Pouch (see treat pouch tab for option) for hands free convenience.

2. Have your dog sit in front of you, then present the backpack for them to simply sniff, when they do, give them your positive marker “good!” or “yes!” followed by a treat.

3. Repeat 3-5 times in a row, then put the backpack away. Practice this for a few days, a few times a day.

4. Now that you have created a positive association to the backpack, you can start desensitizing them to having it on their body.

ADDING WEIGHT

Be sure to desensitize your dog to wearing the backpack in house, before using it on a walk outside where they will be exposed to distractions.

Start with empty saddles for a week, then half a bottle of water in each saddle for a week, and then add half bottle increments each week after that until you reach the desired weight.

*Never exceed more than 20% of your dog's weight.

For instance, if you have a 40lb dog, never put more than 8lb of weight in a backpack.

[One (1) full water bottle = one and a half pounds]
